Zingers fly at Alfred Smith Dinner; Obama supporters not amused by Romney

President Obama and Mitt Romney traded jokes tonight at the white-tie Alfred Smith Dinner in New York City, held by the Catholic Archdiocese of New York to raise money for needy children. The media let us know before the first presidential debate that there would be no “zingers” in Denver, but the barbs were flying tonight.

Who are these guys checking me out at the Al Smith dinner? Yeeesh!instagr.am/p/Q8ngYIyZD8/

Romney, again proving not to be the emotionless straw man we’ve been sold by the media, had plenty of zingers of his own.

See for yourself:

Reporters on the scene seemed genuinely pleased to see humor interjected into what has been a contentious race, but the president’s fans were not amused by what they saw as mean-spirited jibes.

Obama is hilarious but gentlemanly about it. His jokes never cut. Romney’s jokes were savage and mean. #AlSmithDinner

— Nancy Mitchell (@NancyWonderful) October 19, 2012

Mitt Romney really doesn’t respect Obama. His jokes were intended to sting.

@mattdizwhitlock, Romney’s inability to tell jokes about himself reminds the public of his high school bully days where he beat up gay kids.

At The Smith Dinner Romney had 8 jokes aimed at Prez delivered by Romney w/sarcasm. What’s wrong w/Romney he’s full of hate for the Prez!

— sheila monge (@Auxi13Sheila) October 19, 2012

Tough crowd. Anyone have a theory why?

Romney’s remarks at the Al Smith Dinner seemed so barbed because we’ve had 4 years of being told we can’t tell jokes at Obama’s expense.
