Consuming dairy is part of many of our daily lives, whether it comes in the form of milk in cereal and coffee in the morning or the cheddar on your grilled cheese sandwich.

While much has been done to expose some of the disgusting ways the meat industry operates, many think that because dairy cows are kept alive that they must fare better. Unfortunately, that’s not always the case, and it raises real ethical questions about the products we consume.

Dairy farmers often use a tool called hip clamps to help stabilize cows that are temporarily unable to stand.

SAFE, a New Zealand-based animal welfare organization, describes how hip clamps should be used. They note, “Hip clamps should not be left on any longer than 10 minutes and should be loosened and then removed as soon as the cow is bearing weight. They should be put on over light padding. The hip clamps themselves should also be padded using plastic, rubber, or foam tubing.”
